Seven Reasons You Must Have A Coaching Niche

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Alun Richards The vast majority of coaches do not have a specific market niche. We can speculate that there are a number of reasons for this. One could be due to coaches’ desire for variety and options having a niche might seem to restrict our options. We also don’t like the thought of closing down possibilities - and selecting a niche seems to do just that. The truth is very different. And there are seven clear benefits of having a specific, defined niche. Read on to discover what these benefits are. Reason 1. You will get known fast When you have a niche, as youre not serving a mass market, you will get known by the smaller community faster. Smaller, specialist communities are tightly-knit they typically have a rich networks of communication links. So when you’re a coach with a niche, members of that niche get to know about you rapidly. Reason 2. You’ll know what your clients’ problems are In a diversified mass market, clients have many different problems. Mass market coaches are therefore unlikely to be able to predict the type of problem a potential new client may have. As niches are homogeneous and focused, you can quickly identify the biggest problems faced by that niche. So you can spot what your clients need faster, and be able to clearly articulate these needs. Reason 3. You will get credibility fast You get more credibility when clients feel you understand where they are coming from. When you can show you understand their problems, you are part way to helping them resolve them. And when you have solutions to their typical problems, you will also get known for your approach and solutions. Then people will refer other potential clients to you. People talk - especially satisfied ones. When you provide an excellent service to someone they will pass on your name. When you couple these facts with a small, focused community, your reputation will spread rapidly amongst your target market. Reason 4. You will get a name as a specialist As a coach, you want to be the first person your clients think of engaging. Getting a name as a specialist or expert within a community is an excellent way to accomplish this. After all, everyone wants to work with a specialist, not a generalist and people like recommending specialists. Think would you want your local GP or a heart specialist to perform open-heart surgery on you? Reason 5. Promotion is easier Promotion is much easier when you have a niche. Both word of mouth promotion and PR are more likely as there is an angle. The press, as well as clients, like to label people and companies. If they can label you in relation to your niche they will remember you and so will their readers. Reason 6. Your positioning and pitch are easier Your pitch for what you do is easier when you’re a specialist in a niche. As you have focus, and you know what the issues in your client’s niche are, you can readily articulate both the common problems and your solutions. Your pitch is more relevant to your market as you give exactly what is needed, no more, no less. And as a result, you’re more likely to get excellent client satisfaction ratings, which help with testimonials and referrals. Reason 7. Coaches who niche simply make more money If the previous points have not been persuasive enough, heres the kicker. Coaches who have a clear niche make more money, have fuller practices and find it easier to get new clients. One of the highest paid coaches in the world is Chris Barrow, who focuses on teaching dentists how to make more money in their dental practice. Bonus Reason. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts You may have noticed that all the above reasons work synergistically in your favour. When you know your clients’ biggest problems a number of things happen. You appear intuitive and well organised. When you can reel off the top five problems your client is likely to experience, you immediately increase your authority and standing. Introductions are easier if your clients have already heard about you. When you know your clients’ problems you can more easily create products and services to help them. Having these products and services available makes promotion and PR easier still. And more PR opportunities result in more exposure for you, further increasing your credibility. All of this supports your getting more coaching business. And that’s why we’re here, is it not? Alun Richards helps coaches find and reach their coaching niche. Don’t Throw Your Tea Bags Away! Learn The Healing Benefits Of Tea Bags

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Susan Carey Studies have proven the healing powers of plants. Although hundreds, maybe even thousands, of plants show medicinal properties, only a handful are tasty enough to be brewed to make tea. And the healing effect of drinking herbal teas is sometimes even more potent than taking herbs in pill form. Best of all, if taken in tranquility or in good company, tea can even ease your troubled soul. Besides enjoying the healing benefits of tea beverage, here are other creative ways to use your tea bags: Soothe a sunburn or radiation treatment with aloe tea applied topically on the affected area for faster healing and more comfort while sleeping. Just brew two to four bags of aloe tea and pour it into cool bath. Soak in the bath to allow healing and prevent moisture loss from the skin. Burns can also be washed with cooled aloe tea used in a mist-maker. For a quick cold and flu fix, spice up your bath with ginger. Just brew two bags of ginger tea in a pot of hot water, let it steep then add it to a prepared bath. The warm and stimulating effect of ginger is perfect for those who normally experience cold hands and feet, or for those who are recovering from a chill after suffering from a cold, flu or other illness. For instant relaxation and skin rejuvenation, make your own handy facial mist by letting two bags of lavender or chamomile tea steep until cool, then pour in a spray-mist bottle. Stir up some potpourri and soothe your senses at home with two tea bags (jasmine, orange or ginger works well) allowed to slightly simmer in a pan of water. Add a slice of orange, a cinnamon stick, or a few slices of apple for a more potent aroma. If you are planning to sell your house, this could be just the trick you need to inspire that prospective buyer. The author is a big fan of cooking recipes. How to Put an End to Depression

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Phil De Fontenay Depression can have many, many faces. If you are not aware of your feelings and emotions on a daily basis then it can creep up on you and cause misery in your life when you least expect it. We get sad when we fail in our exams, when we’re rejected by the person we love, or when someone very close to us passes away. Depression, however, could be more fatal than just plain sadness. It could cause life-long consequences that could ruin your self-esteem, your health, and your well-being. Here are some excellent tips for conquering depression and to help you get the most enjoyment out of your daily activities. 1. Be Certain of Your Future Goals If you have no goals then the future will seem uncertain. This will create anxiety and just add to the problem. Having goals gives you something to look forward to in life. They drive us on and create a desire for life. Keep your focus on your goals. 2. Keep a Journal. Every day, write down your deepest feelings. Say what you want to say. Get it out of your head and onto paper. Don’t hold back. This is a very therapeutic way to pull yourself back up. Keep writing down whatever comes into your mind and very soon you will feel your mood start to improve. Done properly, this method can create dramatic changes in emotion. 3. Get Enough Light and Sunshine. Lack of exposure to sunlight is responsible for the secretion of the hormone melatonin, which could trigger a dispirited mood and a lethargic condition. Melatonin is only produced in the dark. It lowers the body temperature and makes you feel sluggish. If you are always cooped up in your room (with the curtains closed), it would be difficult to restrain yourself from staying in bed. This is the reason why many people are suffering from depression much more often in winter than in the other seasons. It’s because the nights are longer. If you can’t go outdoors to get some sunshine, you can always lighten up your room with brighter lights. Have lunch outside the office. Take frequent walks instead of driving your car over short distances. 4. Keep Busy. Get Inspired About Something. It’s a fact that people are happiest when they are producing something. Do some activity that you have always wanted to do. Live a life full of inspired activities. What is it that you really love to do? What are you passionate about?. Taking a nice walk in the park, playing sports, reading books, or listening to some soothing music. 5. Make Some Time For Yourself. I mean it. Listen to soothing music. Soak in a nice warm bath. Ask one of your close friends to massage you. Take a break from your stressful workload and spend the day just goofing around. In other words, have fun. 6. Eat Healthy and Exercise Regularly. Avoid foods with lots of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. Sugar and caffeine may give you a brief moment of energy; but they would later bring about anxiety , tension, and internal problems. Alcohol is a depressant. Many people drink alcohol to “forget their problems.” It never works. The ONLY way to handle problems is to confront them. Describe your problems in your journal fully. If you really face them the right solution might appear. Exercising regularly is a vital depression buster. 7. Increase Your Social Life. Your friends are there to give you moral support. Spending time and engaging in worthwhile activities with your friends could give you a very satisfying feeling. Nothing feels better than having group support. Get intimate. Establish close ties with your family and friends. The love you get from others is very satisfying. In times of depression having stable influences around you is comforting. Really take control of your own life. Follow these tips. Come up with your own solutions. You really CAN do it! Phil de Fontenay has been counselling people in all aspects of life for over 15 years. He has helped many people take back control of their lives. He firmly believes that ANYONE can get better.Find out more about depression at http://www.BuildaBetterYou.com/depression Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Phil_De_Fontenay http://EzineArticles.com/?How-to-Put-an-End-to-Depression&id=67684 phentermine money order cheap phentermine free shipping phentermine with out prescription phentermine pharmacy biz

Fish! It’s What’s For Dinner After Gastric Bypass

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Kaye Bailey Since gastric bypass weight loss surgery gives us a second chance of leading healthy lives it behooves us to pay attention to what we eat and incorporate things in our limited diet that can aid our health and longevity. Fortunately for us one of the healthiest things we can eat is also gastric bypass friendly: Fish. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times a week. Fish is a good source of protein and doesnt have the high saturated fat that fatty meat products do. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids. This time of year is great for including fish in the diet because it can quickly and easily be cooked outdoors on the grill. Consider these safe cooking tips when grilling fish: Skewer small shellfish such as shrimp or scallops on metal or water-soaked wooden skewers or cook them in a grill basket. Grill fillets over medium to medium-low heat. Fish can cook quickly and it is easier to slow down cook time and monitor to not overcook. Turn fish only once. (Flipping back and forth will break fish apart.) If using a marinade, allow fish to soak up flavor for at least 30 minutes. Refrigerate while soaking in marinade. If you are going to use the marinade as an extra sauce on top of the cooked fish or seafood, the marinade liquid must be boiled by itself for at least 5 minutes to cook out any bacteria that may be there from when the fish was soaking. To grill shellfish in the shell, such as oysters, mussels and clams, place them directly on the hottest part of the grill. They’re done when the shell opens. Discard those that don’t open after about 5 minutes. How To Measure Your Servings?

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Samantha Hement Do you know much you eat? Maybe you do, and maybe you dont. Its amazing how many people struggle with weight loss for years, convinced that dont eat a lot. Yet the weight stays on or actually increases over time. When, people nosh their way through the day in a distracted state and dont pay attention to the fact that theyre eating. More often, they know what they eat, and they know how many servings they have of what they eat. The problem is their notion of what counts as a serving. When doctors and other expert spell out guidelines for weight loss, they usually create a plan they recommends a certain number of servings of any food or food group. To know what they mean by the word serving, you have to read through the particular guidelines that youre following. The side panel on a cereal box routinely reports nutrition information according to one serving. But one kind of cereal considers one serving to be one cup of the cereal, while another, higher fat, sugary cereal may specify one quarter cup. In the case of the cereal manufactures, they understand that the buying public expects one serving of any cereal regardless of its makeup to contain approximately the same number calories as the rest. So the people who make and tell cereal simple adjust the volume of the cereal that they call one serving. On the diet programs, one serving is actually one unit of the food. One serving of strawberries might be one quarter of a cup, and youd be allowed two servings of the berries in a single sitting. One serving of beef might be designated as one ounce, which means that at a single sitting, you would be allowed four serving. A more understanding of serving would be the standard total of that particular food for one meal. Thus, one serving of strawberries would be a half cup, while one serving of beef would be four ounces. Having said all that, and even knowing all that, some people still dont know how much they eat. They dont actually measure a cup. They eyeball it. Or they measured once, and now theyre gauging by what remember about how it looked in a certain dish. They only accurate way to know how much youre eating is to measure it. If you think youre consuming one designated serving and routinely, it turns out to be twice that, you can see how you might quickly find the weight staying on or moving upward. It only takes a moment to measure food, which is far less that it takes to lose a pound of extra weight. Measuring cups and a simple food scale are all it will take to get in touch with the amounts of your food consumption. Article by Dr.Samantha Hement. Relationship: Keep the Kids Out of It

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Julia Jones Do not make excuses and keep the kids out of it. Generally it is a tendency of us to make false excuses. Most of the times when we fail to do some work we find excuses and at times blame others for it. Especially with married people it is the children who are the soft targets. Often when you are unable to do some work you find yourself saying I could not do it as I had to help the kids in completing the homework. Or I had no time; my whole day went looking after the kids. There are many such excuses you make targeting the kids for your failure of not completing some or the other work because you forgot or did not want to do it. When your partner wants to be intimate with you and you are not in the mood again it your sweet little kids you get in between to avoid the situation by making the excuse of having to get up early morning to help them complete their homework or prepare special breakfast for them. Do not use little kids as the pawns in your relationship. Whenever you tend to make such excuses targeting the kids you create an ill feeling towards them. If the children are big enough to understand then certainly they are not going to appreciate that. There could be an ill feeling in your partner towards the children ant the children could develop it toward you for getting them in between for no reason. Nobody likes to be blamed without a fault. Ill feelings among each other create a gap between family members there is lack of communication, misunderstanding and bitterness. In the long run it leads to conflicts and serious problems. First and foremost be honest with your partner. When you forget to do some work say it and apologize for it. Your partner is not going to nag you for it. If you were tired say it your partner is considerate and understands it. Rather he will be concerned for you. Next time your mate will be considerate enough to see whether you are busy or not and will not demand unnecessarily. To spend time together make sure that your kids go to bed on time, so that you two can enjoy the company of each other. This will not only make you two happy but also your kids. They will not undergo a tensed atmosphere created by your arguments and conflicts. Generally children undergo a kind of strain in their mind due to the conflicts of the parents which the parents are unable to see or understand. This also creates a negative attitude in them which not good for them since it is their growing age. If children are brought up with ill feelings then it does affect their personality. All of us want our children to grow up as healthy, successful personalities with positive attitude. But often parents do not realize that due to such mistakes they are creating a barrier for their children to build a positive character. Always make it a point whatever the argument or conflict keep the children out of it and try not to quarrel in front of them. Help them develop a positive attitude in life. You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to run by running, to work by working; and just so, you learn to love by loving. All those who think to learn in any other way deceive themselves.Saint Francis de Sales Find more information visit: Relationship: Keep the Kids Out of It We at Keepcondom.com are providing you the choices you can make, to select your condom brands according to your needs. 8 Reasons Why you May Not be Losing Any More Weight

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Wayne Mcgregor 1. Drinking too much alcohol or pop.Although there is no fat in most alcoholic drinks they contribute to fat gain because of the calorie content of alcohol. The energy in alcohol must be burned immediately, while your body is busy burning the extra calories from the drink your body will have no choice but to store most other the calories ingested from healthy meals. Alco-pops are even worse they supply calories through the alcohol AND tons of extra energy through the added sugars. Even normal pop or soda should be cut out or at least severely restricted because of the effects on blood sugar levels. You should be drinking more bottled water instead of soda if you want to keep losing fat weight. 2. Too little exercise or less effective routines. We all know we need to exercise in order to stay trim but many people still dont do enough activity to burn off the energy from food or overcome a slow metabolism. You should strive to be active for the most part of your waking hours, or exercising for 20-30 minutes at least 3 times a week. If youre very overweight and struggle to exercise then you need to be doing more low level recreational activities. Many people get fed up with going to the gym and doing the same old routine. When a routine becomes boring you should change it as constantly repeating the same routine can ruin its fat loss potential. Our body adapts very well to exercise and repeating something your body can complete easily wont cause any physical changes. Yes, you will still burn calories but if your body has adapted to your present, daily calorie intake then youll not lose any more weight. A great way to boost results is to re-challenge the body by trying different kinds of activities; swimming, ice skating, dancing salsa or even rock climbing. If an activity becomes fun youll do it for longer and end up burning much more energy to lose weight. 3. A reduced metabolismLow calorie diets tend to work well during the first few weeks then they become ineffective for losing further weight. The reason is they cause the metabolism to slow down, thus your body adapts to the limited calorie intake. If you respond by lowering your calorie intake further youll probably end up losing even more muscle and hitting a weight loss plateau again. This cycle may continue until your resolve finally breaks and you go back to your previous eating habits. The secret is to lower intake slightly while providing good nutrition with plenty of protein to limit muscle loss. Doing some weight training will help boost the metabolism and speed fat loss. 4. Skipping meal too oftenIt sounds simple, if we eat less we should lose weight. For this reason many people skip meals but the body responds by going into starvation mode, the muscles break down in order to maintain the amino acid pool, the result is a lowered metabolism. Also if you let your blood sugar drop too low youll end up with strong hunger pains and probably end up eating far too much at the next meal. Try to eat healthy, small meals or snacks 5 6 times a day, starting with a good breakfast that contains good quality protein. Learn to stabilize blood sugar levels through the G.I. way of eating 5. Eating too much sugar and saltExcess sugar and salt are often combined together in many processed foods. Eating too much sugar in one meal causes increased blood sugar levels; the body must respond and lower it back to normal. The result is most of the excess sugar is eventually stored as body fat. This is where some people get confused because they eat sugary foods or drink lots of soda which contain little fat content, and dont realize how it can cause fat storage. Salt can be confusing too because it contains no energy but can result in weight gains, albeit water gain! Salt causes the body to hold water so too much salt makes some people believe theyre getting fatter. Its possible to be carrying an extra 5 pounds of weight just through consuming too much salt in the diet. Remember to cut down on processed, convenient foods; try to follow a diet plan full of natural, unprocessed foods. 6. Not drinking enough waterDuring an average day many ordinary people become slightly dehydrated because they lose more fluid than they drink; they often dont realize it because the thirst centre is not very accurate. Sometimes dehydration can cause hunger pains as many of us obtain a large proportion of the daily water supply from foods. If you dont drink much water and seem to be frequently hungry your body may be craving the water rather than food. Water also helps boost energy levels so you can workout more effectively to burn extra calories and lose weight. You should be drinking 8 large glasses of water every day. 7. Incorrect portion sizesWhen dieting to lose weight the old philosophy still rings true eat less to lose weight. Although you shouldnt skip meals, as discussed in point 4, the answer may be to eat little and often. Eating more meals or snacks must means small sized portions! 8. Unrealistic GoalsSetting goals that are too difficult to achieve or goals that are totally unrealistic is a common reason for failure to lose weight. Its silly trying to get the figure of a super model if you have an endomorph body type. Achieving your goals is important for continued success. If you dont reach your goal you may end up feeling like a failure and this can cause some people to comfort eat. Aim for small, easily obtainable goals to help build some momentum for success. Losing the recommended 2 pounds each week may sound too slow but at least you should be able to achieve this target without difficulty, then youll feel like a winner, and youll be one step closer to your main goal too! Is Nursing the Right Career for You?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Jeffery Dodd There is currently a great shortage of nurses today which has been resulted in by many factors such as the massive retirement of older nurses. Many are being encouraged to take up nursing courses because more opportunities are now given to nurses in addition to more attractive pay and compensation. If you have been considering to pursue a career in nursing, you may find it helpful to evaluate yourself first if you are fit for the job. Nurses ideally have a genuine concern for the sick and the wounded. Many people are lured to taking nursing courses because of the numerous opportunities that registered nurses can avail of. The best motivating factor in choosing a nursing career, however, should be because you have genuine concern and interest in helping the sick. If you find yourself irritable and uncomfortable around sick people who need your assistance and help, it would be more difficult for you to become an effective and sympathetic nurse. Remember that it is not only medical help that patients ask for from nurses but attention, care and sympathy. Nurses can work under pressure. One important quality that a person should possess when deciding to pursue a career in nursing is having the ability to work under pressure. Nurses are always faced with emergency situations in the hospital. These situations are matters of life and death such as when accidents occur and injured patients are rushed to the hospital. Nurses should therefore be able to work under pressure and to have sound mind and body when faced with tough and emergency situations. When nurses are immediately rattled when such situations occur, safety and welfare of patients can be at stake. Nurses should be willing to learn. The years that a nurse spends in getting a degree in nursing merely prepares her for the profession but additional trainings, learning and advancements are needed for nurses to become more competent in the field of medical service. In addition to this, the advent of many medical technologies that are now being used in hospitals call for nurses who have the ability to learn using them so as to give the most effective medical treatment that a hospital can give to its patients. Nurses can often take additional training or pursue further studies in the field of nursing. Alternatively, nurses can also get additional inputs from doctors and highly trained medical staffs, or avail of hospital programs offered to give additional training. If you have decided on pursuing a career in nursing, evaluate yourself if you have these qualities. These qualities generally make nurses more competent and more effective in their chosen career. The Use and Abuse of Mysticism in The Song of Songs

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Robert Baird The incorporation of Aristotelian thought into the dogma of Catholicism was not the first attempt to have alchemy co-opted or hermeneutically imbued into the whole system of thought. The fact that Aquinas did this under the tutelage of a Dominican Bishop who is regarded as the forbear of Goethe and Illuminized thought has not escaped me. Frater Albertus Magnus is a name still to be reckoned with in the present day as a person by that name heads the International Alchemical group in Salt Lake City. The fact that Melchizedek and Solomon or others in the family of Jesus are adept esotericists and alchemists should not surprise any real scholar. But let us assume Jesus had good intentions and later scriptural or priestly manipulators sought to bring his real and deep understanding more completely into the Christian model of spiritual growth. Here is a report from Pelikan about a fraud or attempt to do this which was accepted as church dogma for a millennium until the Thomist ideologues made the great furtherance of this under the Jesuit teaching system. … can all be traced to Proclus, the great systematizer of Neoplatonism in the fifth century C.E.; and through him much of it goes back to Plotinus, and ultimately even to Plato himself. Although both Plotinus and Proclus were critics of Christianity, they also owed much to it; {Which might have to do with Christianity having borrowed much from the school of thought they were part of.} and, in turn, their Christian opponents shared much of their Neoplatonism with them, especially these very elements of the mystical vision. Therefore it did not come as a shock when, in the sixth century, there appeared a corpus of Greek writings that seemed to have blended Christian and Neoplatonic elements almost indiscriminately and that bore the name of Dionysius the Areopagite. This Dionysius was, in the report of the Acts of the Apostles, the only man named together with the women who joined and believed {Thus it is likely that the Dianistic or people who saw what was happening to women in the behemoth of Constantinism were motivated to try to correct things a little.} at Athens in response to the preaching of the apostle Paul; {Today there are many scholars who say the Epistles to Timothy once thought to be the work of Paul are not the work of Paul.} by the second century he seems to have been known as the first bishop of the Christian church at Athens; in the sixth century he suddenly produced this massive collection of Christian Neoplatonic speculations; and in the ninth century he came to be identified with Saint Denis, patron saint of France and third-century bishop of Paris.(5) {Eusebius is mentioned in his Biblio. Eusebius is a merchant and purchaser of the bishopric of Paris, I believe. The matter of intrigue from far away Turkey and the Basilidae there who are part of the Semites like Sargon requires more research on my part but I suspect this is another example of the Benjaminite/Maccobean/Elephantine/Rothschild/De Medicis continuum and their desires at work.} Certified as it was with such impressive and all-but-apostolic credentials, the thought of Pseudo-Dionysius was accepted as authentic almost without dissent in the sixth century, and it retained its authoritative position, again almost without dissent, for an entire millennium, not being seriously challenged until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. (6) There is no question as to Plato being a noble and an alchemist. The matter of his connection to the Sargon lineage and Hyksos in Egypt where his relative Critias was a priest is a matter of suspicion I continue to track and wonder about. For a certainty I do find the esoteric precursor to Hegelian dialectic by these alchemists does exist. I would refer a serious researcher to the chortling done by Fulcanelli about the inculcation of alchemic rituals and symbols into Christendom that can be found in his book on the Cathedrals which the Templars did build atop Druidic or pagan sites. Although Pseudo-Dionysius was undoubtedly the source for much of it, a major inspiration of Christ-mysticism was the interpretation of the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon{Key to study by Masons today}) as a Christian allegory. As most scholars would agree today, be they Jewish or Roman Catholic or Protestant, the Song was originally a poem celebrating the love between man and woman. But throughout its history it has in fact been read allegorically, and it may even be that it came into the Jewish canon that way. Defending its canonicity at the council of Jamnia in 90 C.E., which stabilized the canon of the Hebrew Bible, the celebrated Rabbi Aqiba declared: The whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel, for all the Scriptures are holy, but the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies. From this interpretation comes the rule promulgated by the rabbis: He who trills his voice in chanting the Song of Songs in the banquet house and treats it as a sort of song has no part in the world to come. (7) Such is the nature of exclusionary elitism so prevalent in this foul cultus along with its fellow Judaeo/Christian/Islamic kin that continue to breed Armageddon and Rapture end games and wars, as if that is somehow what God might want. The Occultation or Usurpation of Religion and the Zohar: An English version of the Zohar, a guiding text of Jewish mysticism, offers new insights. - By David van Biema - TIME Magazine: April 19, 2004 issue The road winds like a Talmudic discourse, first one way and then another, up toward Daniel Matt’s home in the Berkeley, California, hills. There’s a more direct route that my wife likes, admits Matt, 53. But I find this one more interesting. That’s not surprising. Matt is embarked on a solo journey through one of the most influential and maddeningly difficult works in the history of religious literature. After six years of his labor, Stanford University Press has published the first two books of his translation of the Zohar, the wellspring of Jewish mysticism, or Cabala. He will do nine more volumes, all rendered from the Zohar’s original Aramaic. The work has received ecstatic advance reviews (A superbly fashioned translation and a commentary that opens up the Zohar to the English-speaking world, blurbed lit-crit colossus Harold Bloom), and two weeks ago it won a $10,000 Koret Jewish Book Award for monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought. Beneath the praise runs an undercurrent of awe that someone was crazy enough to take on the job. The Zohar’s elusiveness dates to its appearance in the Spanish region of Castile around 1280. Written in Aramaic, a language Jews had not composed in for centuries, the book was attributed to a great rabbi of a millennium earlier. But in fact, in the 1930s scholars determined that it was penned by one Moses de Leon and his associates in the 13th century. De Leon had every reason to fake his work’s pedigree: the Zohar was far too radical to be accepted without a fabricated imprimatur. An utterly original 1,800-page mix of Torah commentary, parody, erotic poetry, numerology and experimental narrative devices, it crams some 400 subplots into a Chaucer-like {Chaucer is an alchemist too.} tale of a band of traveling sages. The book’s form alone, says Matt, is a challenge to the normal workings of consciousness. Its theology is wilder still nothing less than the division of God’s personality, which Judaism had always seen as a unity, into 10 interacting emanations, two of them female. One of these, the Shekhinah, was the Zohar’s obsession, the portal through which it pulled believers willy-nilly into the divine drama. Only their prayer and good deeds could save her from hordes of demons and effect her mystic marriage to God’s male aspect, a reunion described in sometimes erotic detail. Without arousal below, de Leon noted, there is no arousal above. Remarkably, his book caught on. By 1600 the Jewish world saw the Zohar as its third holiest text, preceded only by the Bible and the Talmud. Cabalistic study and meditation flourished, and zoharic principles formed the basis of Hasidic Judaism. The Zohar’s use faded as Judaism absorbed the just-the-facts influence of the European Enlightenment, but it left behind dramatic mementos such as the Bar Mitzvah coming-of-age celebration and the gorgeous Friday-evening song welcoming God’s “Sabbath bride”. The Zohar also informs the current Cabalistic resurgence, so fascinating to Jews and spiritual adventurers like Madonna. And this created new demand for an authoritative English version. Enter Matt. By 1995 he had taught Jewish mysticism at the university level, written a book comparing Cabala and scientific cosmology, and translated some Zohar excerpts. Nevertheless he was stunned when Margot Pritzker, wife of the chairman of the Hyatt Corp., who was studying the book, offered to bankroll a full translation. I told her, optimistically, that it might take 18 years, Matt says. And she said, ‘You’re not scaring me.’ The result is not for everybody. From its opening, an extended discourse on the image of a rose in the Song of Songs (”Just as a rose has 13 petals, so Assembly of Israel has 13 qualities of compassion on every side”), the first volume only plunges further into esoterica. Matt’s commentary, which offers tidbits about ancient water clocks and the silkworm’s arrival in Spain, along with his exegesis of mystical concepts, is often twice as long as his translation. Yet there are those eager to use it. Says Samuel Cohon, a Tucson, Arizona, rabbi who has ordered 40 copies at his congregants’ request: I thought; ‘It’ll be too hard’. But there’s a great desire to get at the source. If this is a profound text, then let’s see why. Matt still has the slightly dazed look of an Ahab whose white whale has arrived un-hunted. He hopes to finish his task by age 70. It’s not time that he will regret. When I wake up, it’s all I want to do, he says. I feel like I’m inside De Leon’s mind now. I know the tricks he’s up to. And he’s a genius. This is the most astounding book in Judaism. It is a judgment his own work makes even clearer. (7) I am open to the possibility that the knowledge or tricks he finds are in the Zohar and De Leons mind are long-standing knowledge systems which had been kept secret by the likes of the Tartessians of Spain and Southern France in a line of schools going back to pre-Christian eras. I have many inter-connections which have been made in other books and we have again touched a few of them in regards to the Templars and Rennes-le-Chateau in this book.
